Politicians React to RGEC

Poway Mayor, Mickey Cafagna: The Problem is Money, Not Governance
I do not agree with the recommendations of the RGEC Commission. Primarily because their recommendation calls for a new and expensive layer of government. This will not solve any problems because it does not provide ideas for additional money for new projects. There are many great projects sitting on the shelves right now which the current agencies do not have funds to complete. We need money for construction of roads and public transportation projects currently planned, not new layers of government to talk about them.

Chula Vista Mayor, Shirley Horton: The Proposal Has Merit
The men and women who served on the Regional Governance Efficiency Commission made an extraordinary effort to propose a governance structure and methodology that would meet the needs of this region. While there may not be unanimous support for each and every detail, I believe their proposal has merit, and can be refined in such a way that the region will benefit from it.

Senator Peace Sees Dialogue Continuing, Reaffirms Goals
Chairman Byron Wear and his fellow commissioners did an excellent job in taking the locals to the next step. From here, legislators should continue to solicit the input of their constituents, including, but not limited to, local elected officials. Our goal is (1) consolidation, (2) improvement and preservation of the region’s quality of life and (3) public accountability for decision-makers.

El Cajon Mayor, Mark Lewis: It Still Needs Work
It still needs to be worked a little bit. I call it the good, the bad and the ugly of regional government, and I'd be suprised if it passes in the legislature. Why would people up north give a rip about us down here? Regardless, the people need to vote on it since they're the ones impacted by it. If it saves money and makes logical sense, the people will approve it.
